LEARN CHINESE IN XI’AN WITH LTL
These are the important details you need to know when coming to learn Chinese in Xi’an with us here at LTL Mandarin School:
- Classes take place Monday to Friday
- Two choices of program: standard (20 hours of group class a week) or intensive (20 hours group class plus 10 hours 1 on 1 class a week).
- All classes are 55 minutes long
- Maximum of six students per class (average of three)
- 70% Oral Chinese
- 30% Reading and Written
- Free assessment with us before coming to China so we can place you in the right class. This is not a test but a way of us discovering your current Chinese level so we know where best to place you.
Standard – 4 hours per day, Monday to Friday totalling 20 hours of Chinese study each week.
Intensive – 6 hours per day (4 hours of group class and 2 hours of 1-on-1 class), Monday to Friday totalling 30 hours of Chinese study each week.
Our Intensive class enables you to make even quicker progress with an additional 2 hours of 1-on-1 tutelage on top of your group classes. The individual classes in Xi’an help consolidate the knowledge you pick up in your group classes and enable you to focus on key areas.
The Free Assessment
No need to worry this isn’t a real test, just a way to help us gauge your Chinese level.
Before starting your course with LTL you’ll have a language assessment so that we know what your Chinese level is. This is essential to make sure we put you in the right class so that you make the most progress.
It would be no use for you to be stuck in a class too low for your level would it?
You’ll have a brief chat via Skype, WeChat, WhatsApp etc with our director of studies for 5-10 minutes and this will give us an idea of which class you should be placed in.
The assessment makes sure everything is all set for when you arrive in China!

What’s a standard lesson at LTL like?
There is no standard lesson but to give you an idea… Group classes are all about enhancing your basis of Chinese as quickly as possible.
Our lessons are all about being dynamic from the very start. We do have a structure though, as all good schools have!

Do we get to talk much?
Yes, this is essential and why we keep class sizes so small.
If you just sit and listen to us, how do you expect to improve. It’s so important to us that you all get speaking as early as possible and get comfortable with the language.
How many teachers will I have?
Generally one or two. This can vary though.
It can depend on a number of factors. These include the season and how busy the school is
A typical scenario will leave you with two teachers – one for Oral Chinese and the other for Written Chinese.
Of course, all teachers communicate about their lessons with other teachers so you don’t waste time going over the same things.
What’s best, individual classes or group classes?
This really is up to you in truth. If you already have a good grasp of Mandarin then putting you into a group is much tougher because levels tend to vary much more from the intermediate levels upwards.
If you are a complete beginner, or have a little knowledge in Chinese, the Intensive course (4 hours Group, 2 hours Individual) would be a great way to start.
Can I also study Chinese online before coming to China?
You sure can, before or after your time in China.
You have a number of options:
1 – Learning Chinese individually Online
2 – Learning Chinese in a group Online
3 – Our brand New Flexi Class system allowing you to book any class, at any time, with any teacher you choose!
You can even study Shanghainese Online and Cantonese Online with us.
Is 6 hours a day too much for me?
It’s a challenge, no doubt about that. However, our students tend to relish and enjoy it.
It’s a great way to consolidate what you learn in group classes and also a great way to tailor content to how you want.
You get a nice balance then of group class work, and then your own time to drill that information home.
Do you have accommodation I can stay at also?
This is your choice.
80% of our students stay at a Homestay with us. They are super popular simply because your level enhances further and they do give an experience you genuinely cannot replicate elsewhere.
That said, if you wish, you can book up accommodation through booking.com or AirBnb if you so wish.
